How Stretching Your Core Can Improve Your Internal Age: Seven Yoga Poses

Benefits Beyond Flexibility

It likely comes as no surprise to read that stretching can increase flexibility and help to prevent injury, but did you know that it can also improve your overall health?

iHeart measures Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity (AoPWV) to assess Aortic Stiffness and compares those results to the average readings per age from the world’s ‘gold standard’ Carotid-Femoral AoPWV measurement system. This comparison is then used to determine a user’s Internal Age.

By stretching out the body’s core muscles, you’ll not only feel the benefits of being more limber but will also reduce stiffness of the Aorta and notice improvements in iHeart’s Internal Age reading. Reduced Aortic Stiffness can lead to a lowered risk of heart disease, stroke and dementia. That’s right: stretching the core muscles can help to lower risk of death!

We asked long time iHeart user (turned Brand Ambassador) and Yoga instructor, Leanne Gerich, to recommend some poses that focus on the abdomen, hips, and lower back. The following can all be done from the comfort of your own home, although as always, please consult your doctor before engaging in any new type of fitness routine.

Cobra Pose

Leanne added: “I would suggest people start with Cobra, Bridge and Bow. Camel is beginner friendly but they should keep hands on the lower back, rather than reaching for the heels [as in the picture]. Wild Thing, Upward-Facing Dog and Wheel are a bit more intermediate but they feel great for opening up the core!”
